What is the installation time for an EDM-700/800?
An EDM-760? Here are some ballpark numbers: ( remember
each aircraft is different.)
For
an EDM-700 EGT/CHT only, installation time is about
10 hours. For fuel flow an additional 6 hours (add
one hour for each temp option is needed). For an EDM-760
it takes about 20 additional hours; 14 with fuel flow.
EDM-800 installation requires 19 hours.
760:
Can't get LF to work on second engine.
Must
tap LF to begin procedure on second engine (LF standard
mode; non-standard mode both engines LF active simultaneously).
Probe(s)
do not work on one engine on EDM-760?
At
the instrument, swap two engine connects and see if
problem switches to other engine readings (wire or
probe problem) or stays at the same engine readings
(instrument problem).

Fuel
Flow
Sometimes
fills 75 gallons and sometimes 65 (tab). How can he
have both?
Set
the main tank to 65 and the Aux tank to 10. Then at
startup will be asked about both.
Can
fuel flow be installed on a 7, 8, or 9 cylinder
Yes:
the transducer is $1200 for high flow plus $695 for
the electronic module.
How
should I install the transducer?
Make
sure the transducer is Horizontal with the three wires
up. Failure to do this will result in premature failure.
What
fittings should I use on the transducer?
Since
the transducer body is aluminum, you must use steel
fittings onthe transducer (supplied) and use 15 ft/lbs
torque max.
Where
does the Transducer get its power.
The
Power, which is 12 volts regulated, is supplied by
the EDM.
Low
fuel flow reading sare 50% of what they should be.
The
transducer is marked IN and OUT. Make sure this is
correct. Also check the K factor engraved on the side
of the transducer.
Inaccurate
fuel flow reading.
90
degree fittings within 3" of the inlet side not
present. Cavitation in the fuel will result in inaccurate
readings.
Consistently
high fuel flow readings?
The
next time the aircraft is flown in cruise, turn on
the boost pump for one minute. If the fuel flow drops,
this is an indication that air is leaking into the
fuel line upstream of the transducer. It is possible
that air is leaking into the system through the selector
valve or other connection. Fuel stain may not be visible.
Do
I need shielded wire?
No.
The JPI electrical system is not noise sensitive like
the Shadin system.
Does
Beech Bonanza need a fuel flow transducer?
The
following do NOT need a transducer because a digital
xducer is already installed:
F33A
serial numbers >= CE-919,
F33C
>= CU-156,
V35B
>= D-10354,
A36
>= E-1766,
A36TC
>= EA-159,
B36TC
all.
When
doesn't the fuel flow option require a JPI-supplied
transducer?
When
they already have a digital transducer.
How
do you reset the fuel USD to zero on the fuel flow
option?
Accumulate mode should be OFF. For Old units: every
time engine is restarted. For new units: every time
fuel is added/removed. Manually step to USD and hold
both buttons for 5 seconds. Works regardless of accumulate
mode on or off.
Can
fuel flow be added to the data recording options,
No,
only the EDM-700 basic.
Package
A or B?
Fuel
flow readings are erratic on carbureted engine.
In
the "Factory Limits" index set to CARB N
and set to Y?
Fuel
actually used is much higher than EDM.
EDM
may have the K factor to low. The correct factor is
around 29.9 for JPI and 84.00 (Hoskins and Shadin)
Fuel
flow is reading too high by about 10-30%
Check
for air entering system at selector valve (change
o-ring) or elsewhere. Must have at least 8" of straight
tubing going into transducer, no right angle bends
closer than that.
Fuel
flow doesnt work
Check
EGT-ALL-FF switch setting (and connections). Call
for fuel tester.
Can
fuel flow be installed in the field?

No
hole for CHT probes.
O-200
and O-300 do not have holes. Use M-113 gasket probes.
Can
one solder thermocouple wire?
Yes,
but use a zinc chloride flux such as Nokorode brand.
Thermocouple wire has a high concentration of nickel.
How
to change EGT reading to 1 degree resolution?
Use
pilot programming mode described in Pilot's Guide:
change EGT?1N to Y
Can
holes be drilled in slip joints for EGT probes? Probe
seems cut off at end.
No.
Any shift caused by engine vibration will shear off
the probe. But
if the inside sleeve hole is oversized (say 3/8")
then any vibration or shift will not shear off the
probe. JPI does not warranty any probes mounted in
slip joints.
Can
an EI probe be replaced with our probe?
Can
a bayonet adapter be substituted for a gasket
Only
if factory probe is a 1/4-turn bayonet. Cost is $50
more. We also have an adapter if factory probe is
a screw-on type but the factory probe.
Blank
EGT column and digits.
Check
at ambient. Check as temp rises to see where probe
fails. Three causes for removal from scan are (1)
open probe - show error (2) low probe reading when
EGTs>1000° here digital will read, and (3)
rapid fluctuations in temp reading on that probe.
What
is the data port connector called?
2.5
mm ID, 5.5 mm OD.
Gasket
probe reads higher than other CHT probes.
Place

Has
IO-540 Lycoming with 5/8-18 thread for oil temp
JPI
has an adapter for $40.
How
to have carburetor temperature display show "CRB"
Connect
carburetor temperature probe to CDT pins P1-5, 6.and
not "IAT."
What
is the polarity for CARB probe Omega connector?
Red
is negative (Alumel), yellow is positive (Chromel).
Are
old EGT probes with heat sink fins the same as the
new ones?
Yes.
But make sure an ungrounded probe replaces an ungrounded
probe.
Can
the EGT probes be bent to accommodate wires that are
too short?
No.
Could damage integrity of the probes. Keep a service
loop in the wire harness so that engine torque and
vibration doesn't break the wire.
Old
scanner has terminal block(s) with probe harness wires
screwed into it (them). Is there an easy way to
disconnect to return instrument?
No,
not on that model.
Do
we supply loaners while instruments are pulled for
repair.
No.
How
do you go through the pressure bulkhead?
Installer
must use an installer provided Cannon connector or
bulkhead boot. JPI does not provide any parts for
going through the bulkhead. Use standard practices.
RPM
doesn't work on Slick 600 magneto. Works okay with
a cassette degausser.
Make
sure the correct sensor is being used. The Slick 600
uses a different, mounting than the Slick 4000 and
6000 series. (Sensor part numbers: Slick 420809, Bendix-1200
420807, Bendix-20 420806)
How
does the tachometer RPM sensor work?
Hall-effect
device mounted next to the magneto senses rotating
magnetic field of the magneto magnet.
What
is the probe credit on instruments?
$25
off list for each standard probe not included with
instrument.
How
long does a probe last?
EGT
and TIT last 600-1000
hours, CHT,
OIL, last longer.
Oil
temperature probe doesn't fit in engine.
Continental
engines require brass adapter, which we provide.

We
do not supply a screw-in TIT. Order from Alcor or
Piper.

EGT
temperature readings ALL erratic using bayonet adapter.
Check
that bayonet or threaded adapter is screwed in tight
in order to ground the factory probe. If adapter is
not grounded well to engine, voltage will be applied
to the adapter thermocouple junction and disrupt the
EDM instrument. Remove factory probe for test.
Can
the wiring harness leads be shortened?
Yes.
JPI uses a high input impedance system that is insensitive
to wire length or resistance. If you add wire, be
sure it is the same thermocouple wire and use zinc
chloride solder such as "Nokorode" brand.

CHT
and EGTs are reading about half of what they should
be.

Do
we cover labor for removing or installing defective
Parts?
No.

JPI warranty found on the back of the "Pilots Operating

parts under warranty, but does NOT cover Labor to
remove or install new parts. If you disagree with
this warranty, take advantage JPI money back guarantee.

Gasket
probe reads other than normal after spark-plug removal
Most
likely damaged the probe during plug replacements.
Examine the probe to see change if junction is separated
from the copper ring. Annealing should not be necessary,
but can be done by heating to about 1100°F. and
checking output temp at probe.

During
LF the TIT over temperature (redline) alarm is 1650F
Firmware
update will address this. If the TIT alarm is less
than 100° over redline, triggered before a cylinder
peaks. The LF procedure will continue to operate and
the TIT redline alarm will be delayed for one minute.
Does
the remote alarm limit signal pulse or remain steady?
It
pulses at the same rate as the display error flash
rate. For EDM-700 it is two per second, 50 percent
duty cycle. Similar for Slim-line.
How
to you transfer data to the data card for the EDM-500
With
power off, plug in card. Turn on power. Display will
say "copying" and then "done" in about 15 seconds,
